bio

Sculptor Jonathan Hils is interested in revealing the skeletal forms of organic matter. A former Adjunct Professor of Art and Studio Technician/natural Sculpture at the College of Charleston, he is currently teaching at the University of Oklahoma. Using metal and wood, his often large-scale works suggest such things as microscopic life forms or the bare-bones structure of a seed-pod. Hils received his BFA in Studio At from Georgia State University and his MFA in sculpture from Tulane University. His works have been exhibited throughout the Southeast. While not literal depictions, the works of both Softic and Hils hint at the underlying structures found in nature and the human quest to understand them.

artist statement

This work documents behaviors, emotions and attitudes regarding the struggle of one's singularity/separation and access/acceptance faced within our (ever increasing) technological existence. Outside of a yearning to understand "place" or "belonging", there is a belief in elements, structures and relationships that interact, on personal and universal levels, to define existence and unanimity.
