For more than a decade Koichi Kurita has traveled the world collecting handfuls of soil from each stop along his journey. In Japan alone he has collected over 10,000 colorful samples that span the visual spectrum. These small samples are brought back to his home to be individually sifted into a fine, dry powder. Kurita then arranges hundreds of these samples in a grid pattern on the floor in small cone-like piles. The result is a dazzlingly complex field of color that reminds us of nature’s fragility and our obligation to ensure its preservation.
