23   [exhibition opening] War on Terror: Inside / Out—Photographs by Christopher Sims and Stacy Pearsall 5-7PM

Delphine Ziegler - Ice HouseWar on Terror: Inside / Out—Photographs by Christopher Sims and Stacy Pearsall juxtaposes the work of two artists: Sims' photographs capture simulated Iraqi and Afghani villages in the US where troops train prior to their overseas deployment; while Pearsall, a military photographer, shows troops in the field in Iraq and Afghanistan. Timed to coincide with the beginning of Barack Obama's first term as President, this exhibition provides a glimpse into two worlds we have had very little access to since the War on Terror began. According to Sloan, "These photographers show us aspects of what life is like for the U.S. soldier from training to battlefield."

Photograph of poster series of images of LincolnThe conference will present a group of leading humanities scholars examining Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War as continuing presences in contemporary American culture. The sectional conflict has long been a defining narrative of American identity, represented in countless films, speeches, novels and non-fiction books, public monuments, and community ceremonies. The war remains a vital resource for the humanities today as a means to discuss nationhood, regionalism, race relations, citizenship, modernity, and other topics. It is one of the most compelling subjects of interest and engagement for a wide variety of audiences, from history buffs and re-enactors to heritage tourists and artists.

Lincoln and the Civil War in Contemporary America features three sessions led by outstanding scholars in a variety of disciplines.  The first presentation, focusing on "Obama, Lincoln, and 2008," will examine a topic of particular timeliness, as the conference will take place two weeks after the presidential inauguration and a few days before the bicentennial anniversary of Lincoln's birth.  Other talks will consider the observance of Juneteenth, recent southern fiction about the Civil War, Lincoln and the Civil War in contemporary photography, tourism at battlefield parks, and the hobby of Civil War re-enactment.  The sessions will provide opportunities for comments and questions from the audience.

As part of the conference, the College of Charleston's Halsey Institute has invited a number of visual artists to participate in sessions with the public audience, and to propose works for a forthcoming exhibition, Present Tense: Vestiges of the Civil War, scheduled for opening in April 2011, on the 150th anniversary of the firing on Fort Sumter.

Lincoln and the Civil War in Contemporary America is made possible by generous support from the History Department and the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Arts and the School for the Arts at the College of Charleston, and The Humanities CouncilSC.

27   [film] Full Battle Rattle - 8pm - rm 309, Simons Center for the Arts

Full Battle RattleDirected by Tony Gerber and Jesse Moss

Full Battle Rattle is the story of a real war and a fake town. In California's Mojave Desert, the US Army has built a "virtual Iraq" and populated it with hundreds of Iraqi role-players. Army units spend three weeks inside the simulation before deploying to Iraq. The film follows an Army battalion through the simulation, as they attempt to quell an insurgency and prevent the mock village of Medina Wasl from slipping into civil war. Despite the movie-set contrivances, the stakes and the emotions are real. As reality and fantasy overlap, Full Battle Rattle moves from comic to surreal to poignant.

16  [exhibition opening] Palmetto Portraits Project IV- 5-7pm,
5:45 pm Remarks by Chief Thomas Carr and Dr. Greenberg
MUSC's new James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, 29 Bee St.

In conjunction with MUSC

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), in partnership with the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston have developed a multi-year collaboration called the Palmetto Portraits Project. Noted and emerging photographers from throughout the state of South Carolina have been commissioned to focus on portraying South Carolinians in the Lowcountry, the Piedmont, and the Upstate—reflecting the full range and diversity of the state's citizens, occupations, and recreational activities. In creating a collection of art to display within MUSC's educational and clinical buildings, the University hopes to remind students, faculty, staff, and visitors of those they serve at MUSC and throughout South Carolina. MUSC and the selected photographers have broadened the impact of the project by donating an identical set of photographs to the permanent collection of the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia.

This is the fourth and final year for the project. A comprehensive exhibition of the complete works by each of the twenty-four photographers will be presented at the South Carolina State Museum in April 2010.

This years photographers were selected by the 07-08 photographers and include Jeff Amberg, Brett Flashnick, and Andrew Haworth of Columbia; Squire Fox of Mt. Pleasant; Molly Hayes and Stacy L. Pearsall of Charleston; and Chris M. Rogers of Johns Island.

6-8PM - OPENING RECEPTION
7PM - EXHIBITION WALK-THROUGH WITH ARTIST AND CURATOR
8-10PM - OPENING CELEBRATION

October 23, 2009 - January 09, 2010
(closed during school holiday: Dec. 22 - Jan. 4)

Exhibition: This is the first major retrospective of the collage and assemblage artist Aldwyth. Now in her 70's, Aldwyth lives and works in an octagonal house on the edge of a salt marsh on one of South Carolina's sea islands. Aldwyth: Work v. / Work n. features fifty-two collage and assemblage works created within the past two decades. A film by John Reynolds with commissioned soundtrack by Bill Carson accompanies the exhibition, documenting the artist's interaction with many three dimensional works. The Halsey Institute has also published a full color, 112-page exhibition catalogue including essays by curator Sloan and Boston artist/writer Rosamond Purcell. Aldwyth's complex, often epic-scaled collages resemble "medieval manuscript pages writ large" says Sloan. Each piece can take years to make. Ackland Art Museum Director Emily Kass says about Aldwyth,"Her remarkable work demands to be seen. It is hard to think of an audience who will not be mesmerized by these extraordinary pieces of art."
